How to enhance self control?
A few years back, I was suffering from severe depression. After a lot of struggle, I muster up all my courage and secretly started taking counseling sessions with psychiatrists. She used to listen to me thoroughly and then used to ask different questions. Those questions are not important to mention here as this is a matter of confidentiality of my matter. However, I want to tell you something really important that she once said to me.
Every Friday I was supposed to note myself regarding things that hurt me and bother me and then jot down those things and discuss them with her. She then after counseling used to suggest to me a lot of good tips that I have to follow till the next session.
Today, randomly, I was scrolling through my diary and I found this beautiful quote that she mentioned. She said, "If you want more self-control, then try to be more self-disciplined."
I think I didn't work on this at that time. I didn't go this deep into its meaning. But today, I realized that this is working.
You might have heard this before on a random motivational video, "If you want to do something and be successful then first start making your bed after you get out of it".
I'm not a motivational speaker but I have observed as a critical observer that once you start skipping something minor stuff it will become your habit. You can also observe this in any of your daily chores. For example, If I talk about myself then, after every class I promise myself that I'll do this reading on the same day I have learned it but after a stressful day at university, I'm not able to do so. In other words, due to long enough deadlines and laziness, I usually don't do this and then the exam comes. Many of you can relate to this.
If you stop the mismanagement of small matters like your hygiene, you will be shocked after seeing the results. I have experienced this myself and sharing this with the intention that it might benefit others. What do you think about this? Would love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
